Year 2

This academic year (2017-2018) is an exciting time for the Key Stage 1 children and staff. We will all be working on the same topics and operating as a 5 class phase. The classes are: Year 1 – Dolphins and Seahorses Year 1 / 2 – Meerkats Year 2 – Giraffes and Lions In the Autumn term we will be finding out about “A Seaside Town”, exploring Worthing as a tourist town, past and present. The Spring term topic focuses upon fairy tales, “Once Upon a Time”, and the children will read different fairy tales and alternative versions of these familiar stories. In the Summer term we move on to “Wild About Africa” where we learn about the continent as well as the “Big 5” and their habitats. The Key Stage 1 team work closely together to match the curriculum experiences to every child’s needs, whist at the same time providing first-hand experiences and challenges. Our aim is to make the learning fun by giving it a real purpose that the children can be absorbed in.
“I really enjoyed making bread. We weighed the ingredients” – Tabitha
“I liked going on our school trip to the museum. I liked seeing all the different dresses.” - Holly

Marwell

On Thursday 13th July 2017, Year 2 went on an exciting trip to see some of the African animals they have been learning about.

It was quite a long journey on the coach but we were all very excited when we arrived.  First we saw the penguins that were enjoying a nice swim.

We saw the cheetahs but they were having a sleep!   So we went to see the giraffes. They were amazing.

Ms Hill was very excited to see the meerkats. We had to drag her away! She wanted to take them home with her. We got very close to the lemurs. One of them wanted to eat Alex’s dress. Lemurs come from Madagascar and they really like the sun.

We walked a long way during the day. We managed to see the tail of the leopard as it was hiding under a tree. This is what we would have seen if it had come out:

We saw zebra, rhino and pygmy hippos as well.

It was a fabulous day and we enjoyed seeing these incredible animals.

Thank you to everyone who helped us on our trip.

Badger's World Book Day

On World Book Day last week, Hedgehog class wrote a story about being magically swept into Fairy-tale land, where everyone had a different adventure before being freed to return back to class.

We also designed book-tokens for a national competition to design a book-token.

The children enjoyed playing a game of "Fairy-tale Head-bands", where they had to guess which character they were from a story.

There was a good variety of costumes, and the class voted on which costume they thought was best. They chose Sam and Scarlett.

Fairy Tale Character Day

To finish our first half term’s work on Fairy Tales, Year 2 held a dressing up day.   The children (and staff) chose a fairy tale character and came to school dressed as that character.

There was a wolf, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Jack, Goldilocks and even a troll!

In the afternoon, the children used the “story strings” that they had created during the week to tell a fairy tale to someone from a different class.

The focus for the second half of the term will be on the children writing their own version of a fairy tale.

We look forward to sharing them with you.

The Greatest Fairy Tale

On Wednesday 25th January 2017, Year 2 children were treated to a drama performance of “The Greatest Fairy Tale Ever Told.”

Having spent the first few weeks reading a range of Fairy Tales in class, the Hobgoblin Theatre Company mixed all the tales up in one story!

There is trouble in Fairy Tale Land...   The Evil Queen is doing away with all of the handsome Princes and it is up to the 3 Little Pigs to stop her!

The show was very funny, and the 3 actors did an amazing job bringing a range of characters into the story.

There was Snow White……

Jack and his Mum….….

and Prince Charming trying to find the owner of the “glass slipper”!

After the show, the actors led a drama workshop, teaching us how to use our faces and bodies to create “creepy trees”, “frogs” and “flowers”.

A fun morning was had by us all!
