SEN/Enrichment

At Durrington Infant and Junior Schools, we pride ourselves on our high level of provision for those children who have additional or special educational needs. Both staff and parents are aware of the high profile that S.E.N. holds within the school, and we constantly strive to develop and improve the support we offer. Our SENCO for both the Infant and the Junior School is Jane Cresswell.

The school's Governors are fully aware and informed of the monitoring of Special Educational Needs, and they effectively provide the time and resources necessary to meet the needs of the children. A central classroom has provided us with a base to ensure the smooth running of our in-depth provision, opportunities for display of children's work and a store for our expanding bank of resources.

Our Enrichment Program

Enrichment groups run all year throughout the Infant and Junior Schools and are aimed at challenging the more able pupils to achieve the very highest standards possible for them. Sessions cover the areas of Literacy (Years 1, 2 and 3), Mathematical Curiosity (Years 1 - 6 ) and Independent Study Skills (Years 2 - 6).

The Enrichment programme is delivered by a dedicated Enrichment teacher and LSA, who work with groups either independently or together depending on the demands of the curriculum area and group size (usually between 4and 12 pupils). Each year group has, on average, one hour-long session per week in each of the subject areas. The aim of the groups is to provide pupils with a breadth of knowledge and experience through a cross-curricular approach, for example maths through art or literacy work inspired by history. At present 90 children across Years 1- 6 are targeted by the enrichment programme.

In addition to the Enrichment groups, the programme offers many other extra-curriculum activities to those children who show high ability in certain areas.
