We are very proud of Sophia in year 5 and her brother Alex in year 2. They were so moved by a news report they saw about the harm that plastic can do to sea creatures, that they wrote a letter to Mrs Ensor and Mrs Wilby, asking for the school to stop using plastic straws.
A lot of children in the infant school have milk every day, and this used to come in individual cartons, each with a plastic straw that was thrown away after use.
Since Sophia and Alex raised this issue, our milk is now delivered in large, recyclable bottles and the children drink out of reusable beakers.
Sophia is very happy about the change that we have made. She says 'I watched a video of a turtle who was hurt by a straw and I felt upset. Now I want to get rid of other kinds of plastic - I am still thinking of how.'
Here they are with the new beakers.
